On Ocober 14th, Stefania Milan is teaching the seminar “Standardizing Democracy: Governance by Data Infrastructure in the Age of AI”, at the University of Padua and in collaboration with Pastis network.
On October 14 at 17:00., DATAGOV’s principal investigator Stefania Milan will be at the University of Padua to hold the seminar “Standardizing Democracy: Governing by Data Infrastructure in the Age of AI”.
The presentation examines the role of data infrastructures in contemporary forms of governance and their implications for democracy. Shifting the focus away from the most visible manifestations of artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making, the seminar concentrates on classification systems, standards, databases, and interoperability protocols. It thus explores how these infrastructures make societies “readable” by institutions and machines, while at the same time risking the erasure of differences and the reproduction or amplification of existing inequalities. What happens to democracy when governing increasingly means making society “readable” by machines?
The seminar will be introduced and moderated by Federico Neresini, and will take place in the Seminar Hall of Palazzo de Claricini. The seminar is hosted by the PaSTIS research unit – focused on the study of science and technology, innovation processes, and communication – within the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy, and Applied Psychology (FISPPA).
The event is open to everyone. You can attend in person or online via Zoom, after registering on Eventbrite.
